Reflections from Rumi: Welcoming the Unexpected & Leading with Grace

“This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival…” — Rumi

Whether it’s joy, unexpected challenges, or a flash of momentary awareness, every “guest” that arrives teaches us something vital about our community.

In public service, just like in life, we can’t always control the visitors that arrive at our door. Some days bring difficult challenges or a “crowd of sorrows” that disrupt our daily rhythm. However, by welcoming every unexpected visitor with grace, an honorable perspective, and open dialogue, we can learn and grow together.

Instead of turning away from the hard moments, we can choose to meet them with a shared commitment to progress.
