Lessons in Infrastructure Financial Management: Aligning Budgets with Reality

Milton is growing rapidly, and as residents, we often find ourselves asking the same question: why do our taxes climb, yet our local roads, transit, and facilities still struggle to keep up?

I work with municipal infrastructure management files every day, but the reality of how tax dollars are managed can be confusing from the outside. To ensure I can bring the sharpest technical skills to the table, I recently earned my Professional Certificate in Infrastructure Financial Management.

I want to step away from standard political talking points for a minute and share a plain language look at how municipal finances actually work. Here are three practical realities that impact us all:

1) The Budgeting Blind Spot

Did you know a municipality can pass a perfectly balanced budget every year while its infrastructure still falls behind? Standard municipal accounting rules often track what a road or water pipe cost to build decades ago, rather than what it costs to replace it today. We might look financially healthy on paper, but the actual physical foundation of our town is aging faster than we are saving to fix it.

2) The True Cost of Building

The price of a new community centre or transit route isn’t just the initial cost to build it. The true cost includes decades of regular upkeep and eventual replacement. When we don’t fully plan for those long-term costs upfront, things break down early, leaving taxpayers with expensive emergency repair bills.

3) Paying Our Fair Share

Delaying maintenance is sometimes framed as “saving money” for taxpayers. But as a father, I see it differently. It is essentially taking out a loan and forcing our kids to pay it back when the infrastructure eventually breaks. True affordability means paying our fair share today.

This is exactly why I am running for Regional Councillor in Milton Ward 3. We must align our long-term financial plans with the physical reality of our infrastructure. It is time to stop reacting to growth and start managing it.

My goal is to bring transparent, data-driven stewardship to the Council table. If you’re interested in learning more about how we can secure Milton’s financial future using smart, evidence-based investments, I would love to connect. Let’s chat!
